How to Plant Onion?

Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil

Loosen the soil to a depth of 8 to 12 inches

Mix in compost or well-rotted manure

Test soil pH and aim for 6.0 to 7.0

Plant onion sets, seedlings, or seeds

Set transplants 1 to 2 inches deep

Space plants 4 to 6 inches apart

Space rows 12 to 18 inches apart

Plant seeds about 1/4 inch deep

Keep the pointed end of onion sets facing up

Water after planting

Keep soil evenly moist

Remove weeds regularly

Apply mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds

Feed with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer if needed

Harvest when tops begin to fall over and dry

Cure harvested onions in a dry, airy place
