Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil
Wait until all danger of frost has passed
Prepare the soil by loosening it and mixing in compost
Make small mounds or hills for planting
Plant pumpkin seeds 1 inch deep
Place 4 to 6 seeds in each mound
Space mounds 4 to 8 feet apart, depending on variety
Water the seeds gently after planting
Keep the soil consistently moist until seedlings emerge
Thin seedlings to the strongest 2 or 3 plants per mound
Mulch around plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds
Water at the base of the plants regularly
Fertilize lightly when vines begin to grow
Provide plenty of space for vines to spread
Watch for pests and diseases
Harvest pumpkins when they are fully colored and the rind is hard
