Dig around the stump to expose the roots
Cut the main roots with an axe, saw, or loppers
Rock the stump back and forth to loosen it
Use a pry bar to lift the stump out
Pull the stump out with a chain and vehicle if needed
Drill holes into the stump
Fill the holes with stump remover or potassium nitrate
Soak the stump with water
Cover the stump with a tarp
Wait for the stump to soften and decay
Chop the softened stump into smaller pieces
Burn the stump only if local rules allow it
Grind the stump with a stump grinder
Remove remaining roots and wood chips
Fill the hole with soil or mulch
