Collect ripe magnolia seeds from a mature cone-like fruit
Remove the red outer coating from each seed
Soak the seeds in water for 24 hours
Mix the seeds with moist sand or peat moss
Place the mixture in a sealed bag or container
Refrigerate the seeds for 3 to 6 months for cold stratification
Check periodically to keep the medium moist, not wet
Fill a pot with well-draining seed-starting mix
Plant each seed about 1/2 inch deep
Cover lightly with soil
Water gently
Place the pot in a warm location with bright, indirect light
Keep the soil consistently moist
Wait for germination
Transplant seedlings into larger pots when they develop several leaves
Move young plants outdoors after the last frost
Plant in well-drained soil with full sun to partial shade
Water regularly until established
