Choose certified disease-free seed potatoes
Select healthy tubers with firm skin and visible eyes
Chit the seed potatoes by placing them in a cool, bright area for 2 to 4 weeks
Cut large seed potatoes into pieces with at least 1 to 2 eyes per piece
Let cut pieces dry and form a callus for 1 to 2 days
Prepare loose, well-drained soil in a sunny location
Mix in compost or well-rotted manure before planting
Plant seed potatoes 3 to 4 inches deep
Space each piece 10 to 12 inches apart
Space rows 2 to 3 feet apart
Place the cut side down and eyes facing up
Water after planting
Keep soil evenly moist, not soggy
Hill soil around the stems when plants are 6 to 8 inches tall
Repeat hilling every 2 to 3 weeks as plants grow
Remove weeds regularly
Watch for pests and diseases
Stop watering when foliage begins to yellow before harvest
Harvest new potatoes after flowering if desired
Harvest mature potatoes when plants die back
Cure harvested potatoes in a dark, cool, airy place
Store only undamaged potatoes in a cool, dark location
