Whist is a trick-taking card game for four players in two partnerships
Use a standard 52-card deck
Partners sit opposite each other
Shuffle and deal 13 cards to each player
Turn the last card dealt face up to determine the trump suit
If the turned card is the ace, the dealer’s side scores an extra point in some versions
The player to the left of the dealer leads the first trick
Each player must follow the suit led if possible
If unable to follow suit, a player may play any card
The highest card of the suit led wins the trick unless a trump card is played
Any trump card beats any card of a non-trump suit
If more than one trump is played, the highest trump wins the trick
The winner of a trick leads the next trick
Continue until all 13 tricks are played
Each partnership scores one point for each trick won over six
The first partnership to reach the agreed target score wins the game
Common target scores are 5 points or 7 points
Keep track of tricks won by each partnership
Use strategy to remember played cards and plan leads and discards
