Remove existing grass, weeds, rocks, sticks, and debris
Kill persistent weeds if needed and wait for them to die
Test the soil if possible
Loosen compacted soil to a depth of 4 to 6 inches
Add topsoil or compost if the soil is poor or uneven
Grade the area so it slopes away from buildings
Fill low spots and remove high spots
Rake the soil smooth and break up clumps
Remove large stones and remaining debris
Water the soil lightly before laying sod
Apply starter fertilizer if recommended
Firm the soil lightly so it is level but not hard
Keep the prepared ground moist until sod is installed
