Measure the area to determine how much sod is needed
Remove existing grass, weeds, rocks, and debris
Grade the soil so it is level and slopes away from buildings
Loosen the top 4 to 6 inches of soil
Add topsoil or compost if needed
Rake the soil smooth
Water the soil lightly before laying sod
Start laying sod along a straight edge
Stagger the seams like bricks
Fit pieces tightly together without overlapping
Trim sod pieces with a knife or spade as needed
Avoid leaving gaps between pieces
Roll the sod with a lawn roller
Water the sod thoroughly immediately after installation
Keep the sod and soil consistently moist for the first 2 weeks
Avoid heavy foot traffic until the sod is rooted
Mow the grass after it reaches the recommended height
Fertilize only if recommended for the sod type
Check for lifted edges and press them back down
Continue regular watering until the lawn is established
