Check the syringe type and concentration on the package
Use only the syringe marked for the insulin concentration you have
Find the unit markings on the syringe barrel
Identify the line labeled 0 at the needle end
Count the markings up to the prescribed dose
Match the dose to the correct unit line
Read the dose at the top edge of the plunger closest to the needle
Do not confuse mL markings with insulin units
Confirm the dose before drawing up insulin
Ask a pharmacist or clinician if the syringe scale is unclear
