Check the test type: rapid diagnostic test, microscopy, or PCR
Look for the result label: positive, negative, invalid, or inconclusive
For rapid tests, identify the control line first
If the control line is absent, the test is invalid
If the control line is present and the test line is present, the result is positive
If the control line is present and the test line is absent, the result is negative
Read the result within the time stated on the test instructions
Do not interpret lines that appear after the reading time
For microscopy, look for malaria parasites on the blood smear report
If parasites are reported present, the result is positive
If parasites are reported absent, the result is negative
Check whether the report names the malaria species
Check whether the report gives parasite density or parasite count
If the result is unclear, repeat the test or ask a healthcare professional
Seek urgent medical care if symptoms are severe or worsening
