Check if the message still appears in your Instagram inbox on another device or logged-in session
Ask the other person in the chat to send you a screenshot or forward the conversation
Download your Instagram data from Settings and activity > Your activity > Download your information
Review the downloaded data files for message history
Check whether the DM was archived, muted, or filtered instead of deleted
Look in your phone notifications if message previews were enabled
Restore a recent phone backup if it included Instagram data
Use the Instagram web version to verify whether the chat still exists there
Contact Instagram Support if you believe the deletion was caused by an account issue
Avoid third-party recovery tools claiming to restore deleted DMs
