Take over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, if safe for you
Use a warm compress against the affected ear for 10 to 15 minutes at a time
Rest with your head elevated
Stay hydrated
Avoid getting water in the ear
Do not insert cotton swabs, fingers, or other objects into the ear
Use prescribed ear drops exactly as directed, if given
Use any prescribed antibiotics as directed and finish the full course
Chew gum or swallow if pressure changes worsen the pain
Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke
Seek medical care if pain is severe, lasts more than a couple of days, or is accompanied by fever, drainage, hearing loss, dizziness, or swelling around the ear
