Wash your hands and put on gloves if available
Use fine-tipped tweezers
Part the hair to expose the tick
Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible
Pull upward with steady, even pressure
Do not twist, crush, or jerk the tick
If the mouthparts stay in the skin, leave them alone if they cannot be removed easily
Clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water or rubbing alcohol
Save the tick in a sealed container if you want it identified
Monitor for rash, fever, headache, or flu-like symptoms
Seek medical care if the tick cannot be removed, the area becomes infected, or symptoms develop
