Turn off power to the garbage disposal at the switch and circuit breaker
Disconnect the sink drain plumbing from the disposal
Place a bucket under the disposal to catch water
Remove the dishwasher drain hose if attached
Loosen the mounting ring or mounting bolts
Support the disposal while twisting it off the sink flange
Lower the disposal carefully and remove it
Remove the sink flange if needed
Clean the sink opening and remove old plumber’s putty or sealant
Install a sink drain cover or new drain assembly if replacing the disposal
Restore power only after all parts are secured and plumbing is reconnected
