Cut the shrub down to ground level with pruning shears, loppers, or a saw
Dig around the base to expose the main roots
Cut through the roots with a spade, axe, or root saw
Pry the stump out with a shovel, digging bar, or stump puller
Remove as many large roots as possible
Fill the hole with soil and compact it
Water the area and level the ground
Dispose of the shrub and roots according to local yard waste rules
Use a stump grinder for large or stubborn shrubs
Apply a brush or stump killer only if allowed and needed
Wear gloves, eye protection, and sturdy footwear
