How To Remove The Drain From The Bathtub?

Locate the drain stopper/plug type (lift-and-turn, push/pull, or pop-up)

Remove any visible stopper

Lift-and-turn: turn the stopper counterclockwise and pull it out

Push/pull: press down to release, then pull up to remove

Pop-up: unscrew/remove the pivot rod or linkage under the overflow plate, then lift the stopper assembly out

If there’s a lift rod/overflow linkage, remove it from the underside

Remove the drain cover/trim plate screws (if present)

Loosen and remove any retaining ring or mounting nut under the tub

Use a basin wrench or pliers to hold the underside while turning the drain assembly

If the drain is threaded, turn the drain body counterclockwise to remove it

If the drain is sealed with caulk or old adhesive, carefully cut the seal around the flange with a utility knife

Tap gently around the drain flange with a rubber mallet to break the seal

Pull the drain body straight up once loosened

Clean off remaining putty/caulk from the tub surface

If the drain won’t move, apply penetrating oil to the seam and wait before trying again

If needed, remove the overflow plate and detach any remaining linkage before pulling the drain

Replace with a new drain kit using plumber’s putty or the manufacturer’s recommended sealant

Tighten the mounting nut/retainer until snug, then reattach linkage and stopper

Test for leaks by running water and checking around the drain and overflow connection
