How To Drain A Hot Water Heater?

Turn off the power to the water heater (electric) or set the gas control to “OFF” (gas)

Close the cold-water supply valve to the water heater

Connect a garden hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the tank

Run the other end of the hose to a floor drain, outside area, or a bucket large enough to hold the water

Open a hot water faucet in the house (to relieve pressure and allow the tank to drain)

Open the water heater drain valve slowly

Open the temperature and pressure (T&P) relief valve if needed to improve flow

Allow the tank to drain completely

Keep an eye on the discharge area to prevent spills or overflows

Close the drain valve when finished

Close the hot water faucet

Open the cold-water supply valve slowly

Turn the power back on (electric) or set the gas control to “ON” (gas)

Check for leaks at the drain valve and connections

Verify hot water is available at a faucet
