How to Replace Garbage Disposal Unit?

Turn off power to the garbage disposal at the breaker

Unplug the disposal if it has a plug

Disconnect the dishwasher drain hose if attached

Place a bucket under the sink to catch water

Loosen the drain trap and remove the discharge pipe

Disconnect the electrical wiring or unplug the unit

Support the disposal with one hand or a helper

Rotate the mounting ring counterclockwise to release the disposal

Lower and remove the old disposal

Remove the sink flange and mounting assembly if replacing them

Clean the sink opening and remove old plumber’s putty

Install the new sink flange with plumber’s putty

Attach the mounting assembly according to the manufacturer’s instructions

Lift the new disposal into place and lock it onto the mounting ring

Reconnect the discharge pipe and tighten the connections

Reconnect the dishwasher drain hose if applicable

Reconnect the electrical wiring or plug in the unit

Restore power at the breaker

Run water and test the disposal for leaks

Turn on the disposal and verify proper operation
