Turn off the water supply valve
Flush the toilet to empty the tank and bowl
Sponge out any remaining water from the tank and bowl
Disconnect the water supply line
Remove the bolt caps at the base
Unscrew the closet bolts
Cut through any caulk around the toilet base
Rock the toilet gently to break the seal
Lift the toilet straight up and off the flange
Set the toilet on a protective surface
Stuff a rag into the drain opening
Remove the old wax ring from the flange
Clean the flange and surrounding area
Inspect the flange for damage
Cap or cover the drain if needed
