Gather tools: wallpaper scraper, putty knife, scoring tool (optional), seam roller, spray bottle or wallpaper steamer, bucket, sponge/rags, drop cloths, gloves, trash bags
Protect the area: cover floors and furniture with drop cloths, turn off power to nearby outlets, remove outlet covers if needed
Test a small section: lift an edge with a putty knife to determine if it peels off or needs moisture/solvent
Score the wallpaper (if not peeling): lightly perforate the surface without gouging the wall
Apply removal solution:
Spray warm water with a wallpaper-removal concentrate or fabric softener mix
Or use a wallpaper steamer over sections until the paste releases
Let it soak: wait 5–15 minutes (reapply as needed) until the wallpaper loosens
Remove layers: scrape from seams and edges, pulling back at a low angle
Clean residue: wipe the wall with warm water and a sponge; scrape stubborn paste gently
Rinse and dry: wipe again with clean water if needed, then allow the wall to dry fully
Handle stubborn areas: re-score and reapply solution/steam; avoid damaging drywall
Remove paint or backing paper (if present): repeat soaking/scraping for any remaining backing
Repair the wall: fill holes or gouges with spackle/joint compound, sand smooth, and wipe dust
Prime before new wallpaper or paint: apply primer/sealer once the wall is fully dry
