Shift the chain to the smallest rear cog if needed
Release the brake if it blocks wheel removal
Open the quick release or loosen the axle nuts
Remove the wheel from the bike
Deflate the tire completely
Pry one side of the tire bead off the rim using tire levers
Remove the inner tube if the tire has one
Inspect the rim and tire for glass, thorns, or damage
Install a new tube slightly inflated, or prepare the replacement tire
Push one tire bead back onto the rim
Insert the tube fully inside the tire
Start seating the second bead onto the rim
Work the bead onto the rim with your hands
Use tire levers carefully if needed
Check that the tube is not pinched between the tire and rim
Inflate the tire partway and inspect the bead seating
Inflate to the recommended pressure
Reinstall the wheel on the bike
Tighten the axle or close the quick release
Reconnect the brake if needed
Spin the wheel and check for proper seating and clearance
