How to Replace Ball Joints?

Park on a level surface, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels

Loosen the lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle

Raise the vehicle with a jack and support it securely on jack stands

Remove the wheel

Inspect the suspension to identify the upper or lower ball joint to be replaced

Remove the cotter pin from the ball joint nut

Remove the ball joint nut

Separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle or control arm using a ball joint separator or pickle fork

Remove any retaining bolts, rivets, or snap rings securing the ball joint

Press or remove the old ball joint from the control arm or knuckle using the proper tool

Clean the mounting surface

Install the new ball joint into place

Secure it with the correct bolts, snap ring, or fasteners

Torque all fasteners to manufacturer specifications

Reconnect the ball joint stud to the steering knuckle or control arm

Install and torque the nut to specification

Insert a new cotter pin if required

Reinstall the wheel

Lower the vehicle

Torque the lug nuts to specification

Check alignment and have the vehicle aligned if required

Test drive and recheck for looseness or unusual noise
