How To Replace Coolant?

Park on a level surface and let the engine cool completely

Gather the correct coolant, a drain pan, funnel, gloves, and basic tools

Check the owner’s manual for the correct coolant type and mixture

Open the hood and locate the radiator cap or coolant reservoir cap

Place a drain pan under the radiator drain plug or lower hose

Open the drain plug or remove the lower hose to drain the old coolant

Drain the coolant from the overflow or expansion tank if needed

Close the drain plug or reconnect the lower hose

Fill the system with the correct coolant mixture

Fill the coolant reservoir to the proper mark

Start the engine with the heater set to hot

Let the engine run until it reaches operating temperature

Add coolant as the level drops while air is purging from the system

Check for leaks around hoses, drain plug, and cap

Shut off the engine and let it cool

Recheck the coolant level and top off if needed

Dispose of old coolant properly at a recycling or hazardous waste facility
