Place the baby on a firm, flat mattress
Keep the sleep surface free of pillows, blankets, loose sheets, and soft toys
Put the baby on their back for every sleep
Do not co-sleep if either adult smokes, uses alcohol, or takes sedating drugs
Do not co-sleep if either adult is extremely tired or unable to wake easily
Do not co-sleep on a couch, recliner, or armchair
Do not co-sleep if the baby was born premature or had a low birth weight unless a pediatrician says it is safe
Keep the baby away from gaps between the mattress and wall or bed frame
Keep the baby away from edges where they could fall
Use a bedside bassinet or sidecar sleeper if possible
Keep pets and other children out of the sleep space
Dress the baby in light sleep clothing instead of using loose blankets
Keep the room at a comfortable temperature to avoid overheating
Make sure the baby’s face and head remain uncovered
Breastfeeding parents should return the baby to their own sleep space after feeding if possible
Follow guidance from your pediatrician for your baby’s age and health conditions
