How To Send Certified Mail?

Choose the mail type: Certified Mail with Return Receipt (optional) and/or Restricted Delivery (optional)

Prepare the letter/package and any attachments

Complete PS Form 3800 (Certified Mail) and PS Form 3811 (Return Receipt) if requested

Fill in:

Sender name and address

Recipient name and address

Service options (return receipt, restricted delivery, etc.)

“Article Number”/tracking number area is left for the post office to assign if required

Take the item and completed forms to a USPS location

Pay the required postage and certified mail fees at the counter

Ask for the receipt and keep it for your records

If using a return receipt, ensure the correct delivery option is selected (electronic or paper, if offered)

Track the item using the provided tracking number

Verify delivery status when available and retain proof of delivery (return receipt and/or tracking confirmation)
