How to Set Pavers for Patio?

Mark the patio area with stakes and string

Check local codes and call utility locating services before digging

Remove sod, soil, and debris to the required depth

Excavate for base, bedding sand, and paver thickness

Slope the area away from structures for drainage

Compact the subgrade thoroughly

Install edge restraints around the perimeter

Add crushed stone base in 2 to 4 inch layers

Compact each base layer until firm and level

Add a 1 inch layer of bedding sand

Screed the sand smooth and level

Lay pavers in the chosen pattern

Keep pavers tight and aligned

Cut pavers to fit edges and corners

Install edge restraints if not already in place

Spread joint sand over the pavers

Sweep sand into the joints

Compact the pavers to settle them

Add more joint sand and sweep again

Repeat until joints are filled

Clean the surface and check for levelness

Seal the pavers if desired

Avoid heavy use until the patio is fully set
