How To Sew A Button?

Choose the button type and thread color

Thread a needle and tie a knot at the end

Mark or position the button on the fabric

Push the needle up through the fabric at the attachment point

Pull the thread through until the knot sits flat against the fabric

Sew the first stitch through the button holes and back through the fabric

Repeat through the button holes several times (about 6–12 stitches)

If using a shank, place a toothpick/thread spool between button and fabric while stitching

Keep stitches tight and evenly spaced

Finish by bringing the needle back through the fabric near the last stitch

Tie off: pass the needle through a few existing stitches, then pull tight

Cut the thread close to the fabric

If needed, secure with a couple of extra knots and trim neatly
