Wear gloves and safety glasses
Secure the chainsaw with the chain brake engaged
Clean the chain and inspect for damage
Identify the correct file size for your chain
Use a round file and file guide
Match the file angle to the cutter angle
File each cutter from the inside to the outside
Use smooth, even strokes
Count strokes and keep them consistent on each cutter
Sharpen all cutters on one side first
Rotate the saw and sharpen the cutters on the other side
Keep all cutters the same length
Check and adjust depth gauges with a flat file and gauge tool
Lubricate the chain after sharpening
Test the chain tension before use
Run the saw briefly and recheck performance
