How to Start an IV?

Only perform IV insertion if you are trained, authorized, and following your facility’s protocol

Gather supplies: IV catheter, tourniquet, antiseptic, gloves, dressing, tape, flush, extension set, sharps container

Verify patient identity and check the order

Explain the procedure and obtain consent as required

Perform hand hygiene and don gloves

Select an appropriate vein

Apply the tourniquet

Clean the site with antiseptic and let it dry

Stabilize the vein and insert the catheter bevel up at the proper angle

Advance until blood return is seen

Lower the angle and advance the catheter into the vein

Release the tourniquet

Remove the needle and activate safety device

Connect the extension set or flush

Confirm patency by flushing per protocol

Secure the catheter with dressing and tape

Dispose of sharps properly

Document the insertion, site, gauge, and patient response

Seek help or stop if you are not trained or if complications occur
