Wash hands and gather supplies
Position the person comfortably and explain the procedure if possible
Put on gloves and other required protective equipment
Check suction equipment and set the suction pressure to the prescribed level
Open a sterile suction catheter without contaminating it
If ordered, pre-oxygenate the person
Insert the catheter into the tracheostomy tube without applying suction
Advance only until resistance is met, then withdraw slightly
Apply suction while withdrawing the catheter in a slow, rotating motion
Limit each suction pass to about 10 to 15 seconds
Allow the person to rest and re-oxygenate between passes
Repeat only as needed, using a new sterile catheter if required by protocol
Monitor breathing, color, oxygen saturation, and comfort throughout
Stop if the person becomes distressed, cyanotic, or has significant bleeding
Dispose of supplies properly
Clean the equipment as directed
Wash hands after the procedure
Seek medical help if suctioning does not clear the airway or symptoms worsen
