How to Start IV?

Verify the order, patient identity, allergies, and indication for IV access

Perform hand hygiene and gather supplies

Select an appropriate vein and site

Apply the tourniquet and assess the vein

Clean the site with antiseptic and allow it to dry

Stabilize the vein and insert the catheter bevel up at a shallow angle

Advance until blood return is seen, then lower the angle

Advance the catheter into the vein and withdraw the needle

Release the tourniquet

Attach the extension set or IV tubing

Flush the line and confirm patency

Secure the catheter with dressing and tape

Dispose of sharps properly

Document the procedure and monitor the site regularly
