Wash and scrub the sweet potatoes
Peel them if desired
Cut into even chunks or slices
Add 1 to 2 inches of water to a pot
Place a steamer basket above the water
Bring the water to a boil
Add the sweet potatoes to the steamer basket
Cover the pot with a lid
Steam until fork-tender, about 15 to 25 minutes
Check for doneness with a fork or knife
Remove from heat and serve
