Add olive oil or butter to the skillet
Add the asparagus in a single layer
Season with salt and pepper
Cook for 4 to 7 minutes, tossing or turning occasionally
Add minced garlic, lemon juice, or herbs if desired
Cook until the asparagus is tender-crisp and lightly browned
Remove from the skillet and serve immediately
