Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C)
Wash and scrub the yams
Pat the yams dry
Pierce each yam several times with a fork
Place the yams on a baking sheet
Bake for 45 to 60 minutes, depending on size
Turn the yams halfway through baking if desired
Check for doneness by piercing with a fork; they should be soft
Remove from the oven
Let cool for a few minutes
Peel or split open and serve
