Trim the stem ends if needed
Slice, quarter, or leave whole depending on the recipe
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat
Add butter, olive oil, or both
Add the mushrooms in a single layer
Cook without stirring for 2 to 3 minutes
Stir and continue cooking until they release moisture and it evaporates
Season with salt and pepper
Add garlic, herbs, or onions if desired
Cook until browned and tender, about 5 to 8 minutes total
