Take an over-the-counter pain reliever such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, following the label directions
Apply a warm compress to the painful ear for 10 to 15 minutes at a time
Keep your head elevated, especially when lying down
Stay hydrated
Avoid putting anything into the ear
Do not use cotton swabs or ear drops unless a doctor says it is safe
Chew gum or swallow if the pain is related to pressure changes
Use a saline nasal spray if congestion is contributing to ear pressure
Rest and avoid loud noise
Seek medical care if the pain is severe, lasts more than a day or two, or comes with fever, drainage, hearing loss, or dizziness
