Stay calm and keep your dog still
Apply firm pressure to the nail with clean gauze or a cloth for 5 to 10 minutes
Use styptic powder if available
If you do not have styptic powder, use cornstarch or flour
Pack the powder onto the bleeding nail and hold pressure
Keep the paw elevated if possible
Do not wipe away the clot once bleeding starts to slow
Apply a clean bandage if the bleeding is minor and your dog will leave it alone
Prevent licking by using an e-collar if needed
Keep your dog quiet and limit activity for the rest of the day
Check the nail for cracks, splits, or a partially torn nail
Trim only loose broken pieces if they are easy to remove and your dog is calm
Contact a veterinarian if bleeding does not stop after 10 to 15 minutes of pressure
Contact a veterinarian if the nail is torn deeply, broken near the base, or very painful
Contact a veterinarian if swelling, pus, limping, or continued bleeding develops
Keep styptic powder and gauze in a pet first-aid kit for future use
