Take an over-the-counter pain reliever such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, if safe for you
Use a warm compress on the painful ear for 10 to 15 minutes
Keep your head elevated to reduce pressure
Chew gum or swallow if the pain is from pressure changes
Use over-the-counter ear drops only if the eardrum is not ruptured and the product is appropriate
Avoid putting cotton swabs, fingers, or other objects in the ear
Avoid getting water in the ear
Treat nasal congestion with saline spray or a decongestant if appropriate
Rest and stay hydrated
Seek urgent medical care if you have severe pain, fever, drainage, hearing loss, swelling, dizziness, or trauma
