Soak the foot in warm water for 15 to 20 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day
Keep the foot clean and dry between soaks
Gently lift the nail edge with a small piece of clean cotton or dental floss
Change the cotton or floss daily
Wear roomy shoes or open-toe footwear
Avoid tight socks and high heels
Trim toenails straight across
Do not cut toenails too short
Do not round the corners of the nail
Avoid picking at or digging into the nail
Use over-the-counter pain relief if needed
Apply an antiseptic or antibiotic ointment if the skin is broken
Rest and reduce pressure on the toe
See a doctor if there is severe pain, swelling, pus, spreading redness, or repeated ingrown toenails
Seek medical care if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or nerve problems
Consider professional nail trimming or minor nail removal for recurring cases
