Turn on the DSLR
Insert a charged battery and memory card
Attach the lens
Remove the lens cap
Set the camera to Auto or Manual mode
Hold the camera with both hands
Look through the viewfinder or use Live View
Frame the subject
Focus on the subject
Adjust aperture, shutter speed, and ISO if needed
Half-press the shutter button to lock focus
Press the shutter button fully to take the photo
Review the image on the screen
Adjust settings and retake if necessary
Save and transfer photos from the memory card
