Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery negative terminal
Locate the ignition coil
Inspect the coil for cracks, burns, corrosion, or damaged wiring
Disconnect the coil electrical connectors
Remove the coil if needed for testing
Set a multimeter to ohms
Measure primary resistance across the coil primary terminals
Compare the reading to the manufacturer’s specification
Measure secondary resistance between the high-voltage terminal and the primary terminal
Compare the reading to the manufacturer’s specification
Check for continuity between the coil terminals and ground if required
Reconnect the coil and battery
Use a spark tester on the ignition output
Crank the engine and check for a strong spark
Swap the coil with a known good coil if available
Replace the coil if resistance readings are out of spec or no spark is produced
