Turn off power and discharge the capacitor completely
Remove the capacitor from the circuit if possible
Set a digital multimeter to capacitance mode
Connect the meter probes to the capacitor terminals
Read the capacitance value on the display
Compare the reading to the capacitor’s rated value
Use an LCR meter for more accurate measurement
Test electrolytic capacitors with correct polarity when required
Check for open, shorted, or leaking capacitors if the reading is abnormal
Replace the capacitor if the measured value is far outside tolerance
