Remove your hand from the heat source immediately
Cool the burn under cool running water for 20 minutes
Remove rings, bracelets, or tight items before swelling starts
Do not use ice, butter, oil, toothpaste, or ointments on the burn
Gently pat the area dry after cooling
Cover the burn with a clean, nonstick sterile dressing or cling film
Keep the hand elevated if it is swollen
Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, following the label
Do not pop any blisters
Seek medical care if the burn is large, deep, blistering badly, white or charred, very painful, or affects fingers, joints, or movement
Seek urgent care if there is numbness, increasing redness, swelling, pus, fever, or the burn does not improve
Get emergency help if the burn is severe or covers a large area
