Rest the ankle and avoid activities that worsen swelling
Elevate the ankle above heart level when possible
Apply ice for 15 to 20 minutes at a time several times a day
Use compression with an elastic bandage or ankle brace
Wear supportive shoes
Reduce salt intake if swelling is related to fluid retention
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if appropriate and safe for you
Gently move the ankle to maintain circulation if pain allows
Seek medical care if swelling is severe, sudden, painful, red, warm, or after an injury
Seek urgent care if you have trouble breathing, chest pain, or swelling in both legs with shortness of breath
