How to Treat Scabies at Home?

Use a prescribed scabicide such as permethrin 5% cream or oral ivermectin as directed by a healthcare professional

Apply the medication exactly as instructed, usually to all skin from the neck down and under the nails

Leave the treatment on for the recommended time before washing it off

Repeat the treatment if instructed, often about 7 days later

Treat all household members and close sexual contacts at the same time, even if they have no symptoms

Wash bedding, towels, and clothing used in the previous 3 days in hot water and dry on high heat

Seal items that cannot be washed in a plastic bag for several days to a week

Vacuum mattresses, carpets, and upholstered furniture

Trim fingernails and clean under them to reduce mite spread

Avoid close skin-to-skin contact until treatment is completed

Use antihistamines or soothing lotions if recommended for itching

Seek medical care if symptoms persist, worsen, or signs of infection develop
