Rest and drink plenty of fluids
Use acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever and pain if appropriate
Avoid aspirin in children
Eat soft, cool, bland foods
Avoid spicy, acidic, salty, or hot foods
Use cold drinks, popsicles, or ice chips for mouth pain
Keep the mouth clean with gentle rinsing
Wash hands often with soap and water
Avoid close contact with others until fever is gone and blisters are improving
Keep children home from school or daycare while contagious
Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces
Do not share cups, utensils, towels, or bedding
Apply soothing skin care for rash or blisters if needed
Seek medical care for dehydration, trouble breathing, severe pain, high fever, or worsening symptoms
