Rest and drink plenty of fluids
Use acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever and pain, if appropriate
Avoid aspirin in children
Eat soft, cool foods that are easy to swallow
Avoid acidic, spicy, salty, or hot foods and drinks
Use cold liquids, popsicles, or ice chips to soothe mouth pain
Keep the mouth clean with gentle brushing and rinsing
Wash hands frequently and avoid close contact with others
Disinfect shared surfaces and objects
Keep the child home until fever is gone and mouth sores have improved
Seek medical care if dehydration, severe pain, trouble breathing, or worsening symptoms occur
