Rest and drink plenty of fluids
Use acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever and pain if needed
Avoid aspirin in children
Eat soft, cool foods
Avoid spicy, salty, or acidic foods
Use cold drinks, popsicles, or ice cream to soothe mouth pain
Wash hands often with soap and water
Keep the child home from school or daycare until fever is gone and mouth sores have improved
Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and shared items
Avoid close contact with others until symptoms improve
Seek medical care if the child cannot drink, has signs of dehydration, has trouble breathing, has severe symptoms, or is very young or immunocompromised
