How to Treat Pubic Lice?

Use an over-the-counter lice treatment containing permethrin 1% or pyrethrins with piperonyl butoxide

Apply the treatment exactly as directed on the product label

Treat all affected hair-bearing areas except the scalp and eyebrows unless instructed by a clinician

Leave the treatment on for the recommended time, then rinse off

Repeat treatment in 7 to 10 days if directed by the product label or clinician

Remove nits and lice with a fine-tooth comb if needed

Wash clothing, towels, and bedding used in the previous 2 to 3 days in hot water and dry on high heat

Seal items that cannot be washed in a plastic bag for at least 2 weeks

Avoid sexual contact until treatment is completed and partners are treated

Notify recent sexual partners so they can be treated

Avoid sharing towels, bedding, or clothing until the infestation is cleared

Treat any secondary skin infection if present

See a clinician if treatment fails, symptoms worsen, or lice are on eyelashes or eyebrows

Use petroleum jelly on eyelashes only if advised by a clinician

Do not use lice treatments on eyebrows or eyelashes unless specifically instructed by a clinician

Check for other sexually transmitted infections if pubic lice were acquired through sexual contact
