Rest and avoid prolonged sitting
Use a cushion or donut pillow when sitting
Apply ice for 15 to 20 minutes several times a day for the first 48 hours
Apply heat after the first 48 hours if it helps
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if safe for you
Sit with good posture and lean slightly forward when needed
Avoid activities that worsen the pain
Use a stool softener if pain is related to constipation
Try gentle stretching and light movement
Maintain a healthy weight if excess weight is contributing
See a doctor if pain is severe, lasts more than a few weeks, or follows an injury
Seek urgent care if there is numbness, weakness, fever, swelling, or loss of bowel or bladder control
